In the process of grinding the teeth of the blade, a concave area
is formed which is
called a "gullet". (See arrow- Fig. 5). It serves
several functions which can be explained using the analogy of a plow:
as a plow is being dragged across the surface of the earth the concave
configuration of the gullet causes it to bite into the earth with very
little downward pressure. Additionally, it causes the
earth to ride up into the gullet area and be removed from the furrow. The gullet of dental saw blades serve a similar function except
that the removed material is die stone dust.

If you position the
blade (Fig. 6) so that the teeth are facing you, notice that the teeth are not in a
straight row: they are intentionally bent to the right and left in an
alternating pattern. This is called the "set".
